It's hard to start out as a new decade when there is immediately so much controversy about when you really start. Do you start out at "00 or do you have to wait until you're '01 to officially begin? So half of your crew celebrates with you one year and the others wait and try to celebrate with you later. And then there is the confusion about what to call you...the double o's, the nons, the noughtys? It's a wonder you went around humming Destinys Child's "Say my name Say my name"
You were awfully hard to pin down musically. It's no wonder we started seeing so many cross over artists and mouth dropping duets (still my favorite: Eminem and Elton John)
Come to think of it you were all over the board politically as well. Through diversity, patriotism was reborn and with it a longing to cocoon, isolate, alienate. This soon spilled into a deeper sense of responsibility and a cry for change. Of course could we really afford some of the changes that were headed our way?
I know that I, like many, chose to spend a bit more time in front of the screens, big and little, while I crawled into a little cocoon of denial. (Don't knock it, it can be cozy). You offered up a lot of laughs, although many left me shaking my head afterward in a feeble penitent nod. Must you be so naughty, Noughties? South Park was just the beginning. (see me shaking my head).
We are now entering the Teens. Teens can be a fickle lot and they can behave in an awfully scary manner. I don't know, Kieran and I raised three amazing people through their teens. We survived those teens, I'm sure we'll survive these Teens...
As we wrapped up some business on Thursday I heard something on the radio and sadly asked Kieran "Is today New Year's Eve?" His reply of yes, at first brought sadness and then, I don't know. In the numbness that my emotions have gelled into lately I really felt no sadness for the year to pass. I had to muster up my hopefulness for the new year to come. And the Decade it forbears: After all, Teens can be a fickle lot as well.
